A study reviews the use of kojic acid as a skin-lightening ingredient in the cosmetics industry. Kojic acid is gentle on the skin in comparison to other treatments. It is used with other ingredients to treat skin conditions like melasma and dark spots. In a study with 39 people, KA (2%) was combined with glycollic acid (5%) and compared to hydroquinone (HQ) 2% with the same acid. More than half of the people saw the same improvement on both sides of the face. Also, 28% had better results with kojic acid, and 21% with HQ. This means kojic acid works just as well as HQ for melasma.
